Discussion concerning level crossings

Pevensey Bay

Unread postby Chris Osment » Mon Apr 21, 2014 4:10 pm

According to a posting on another list today, the LC at Pevensey Bay is 'out of action' with the barriers down and allegedly causing major disruption on the A259.

The message claims that the telephone at the crossing is locked out-of-use, there is no notice at the station with any emergency number, and no NR number in the local 'phone book.

Apparently the trains are still "going thru' OK"!

As it seems a rather odd situation, I wonder if anyone has any more reliable information?

It appears to be a normal CCTV crossing. If the barriers have failed, nothing can be done about it until an operator arrives. There is no reason to not run trains at normal speed meanwhile.

The situation is probably history by now.

Is it normal to Fix the phones out of use?

Barrier failure at this location isn't an unusual occurrence I believe.

It is normal to not have a telephone at all.

From some further information posted subsequently, it would appear that the telephone in question is a new telephone installed recently, but locked OOU. Maybe in readiness for the crossing being converted to MCB-OD ??? Of course, if it's visible to the public in the meantime, then I can understand why they might get confused/irate about not being able to use it.
