Collision on Yafforth Level Crossing, Wensleydale Railway

Unread postby John Webb » Fri Aug 5, 2016 7:50 pm

I've come across a report on another railway forum that on the 3rd of August a car crossing Yafforth level crossing (AOCL?)on the Wensleydale Railway was hit by one of their trains returning from Northallerton West station. This was the first day of this operating season that trains were running to and from Northallerton West.

The report (see http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=133661) was made by a train passenger.

The railway has suspended operations over the railway east of Leeming Bar to Northallerton West until further notice.

I can confirm that Yafforth level crossing is an AOCL, and that an investigation is under way.

It is worth noting (unless things have changed) that the line belongs to Network Rail and not the Wensleydale Railway.

RAIB announced today (17th Aug, 2016):
"We have undertaken a preliminary examination into the circumstances surrounding this accident. Having assessed the evidence which has been gathered to date, we have decided not to conduct a full investigation, but to publish a safety digest."
