There were some places on single line layouts where the signalling involved junction distant signals. I know two places on the Isle of Wight that were equipped as such until Southern Railway days. They brought in some of their "standardisation" rules and presumably decided that separate main and branch line distant signals were extravagant, especially when the branch signal might only be worked once or twice a day.
