Closure of Magpie Grove

Unread postby GarthTilt » Mon Nov 25, 2013 3:22 pm

This box which was the first to be installed on the L&MN Section from Old Castle Crossing to Cross Hands, does not appear in the K2 Sec.'C' item for the closure of adjacent Sandy Junction and Cynheidre boxes on 25 Feb. 1968. The box could switch out (Single line long & short token working). There is a H.C.Casserley photo from a rail tour on 25 Sep,1965 that clearly shows the passing loop out of use and the box with netting applied to the windows and the signals pulled off.
It is still listed in the Swansea Operating District Supplement No.4 to the Sectional Appendix, dated Oct.1966. Does anyone know any more?

I bought the signal box diagrams from BR in Carmarthen in the late 60s of both Magpie Grove and Cynheidre boxes. They are currently is store in my son's attic.

That's very nice to know that they have survived and are safe in your son's attic. If he could be persuaded to get them down one day and photograph them both individually then I would very much like to see them. Sadly we are no nearer knowing the date when Magpie Grove was abolished. But well done for having the foresight to buy the two diagrams for posterity.

This is not much in the way of an answer, but it may be of interest.

Cooke gives just "Closed c 1966" for Magpie Grove SB and no opening date. He gives no indication which of the two lines at the loop was closed first.

Full reference:
Track Layout Diagrams of the GWR and BR WR, Section 57 Llanelly, RA Cooke, 1985.
It has not yet been updated and re-published by Lightmoor.
