Side lever on Sykes Instrument

Unread postby Chris Osment » Mon Aug 8, 2016 7:50 pm

In the course of reading various references to the working of the swing bridge at Pottington (on the Ilfracombe Branch), both before the opening of the 1898 'new' Barnstaple Town signal-box (H Raynar Wilson) and then later during the BR era (SR instructions for the bridge GF), I have come across instructions to "lift the side lever" on a Sykes instrument.

I have never come across a Sykes instrument with a side lever before. What can anyone tell me about them please? Is this perhaps simply a variant of the Sykes 'lift to plunge' instrument?
