Staveley or Barrow Hill

Unread postby RDNA » Mon Feb 13, 2017 11:40 am

I have a recollection of seeing the boxes at Barrow Hill on the Midland Railway's Tapton Junction to Rotherham line named Staveley (eg Staveley South) in a pre 1960 sectional appendix that I no longer have access to.

Can any one confirm this? If so when did the name changes occur and were they instigated by the Eastern Region due to a regional boundary change?

Thanks in anticipation,

Although the station had been renamed Barrow Hill & Staveley Works in 1900 the boxes did not follow suit at that time. It was the 18/6/51 renaming to plain Barrow Hill that initiated the change.

Thanks John, much earlier than I was guessing then.

Whether it had anything to do with the LMR also having a Staveley in Westmorland is hard to say. Generally renamings for that problem took place in LMS days.

I wondered about 'Staveley Central' on the adjacent GCR line, with that and 'Staveley Town' the ER would have a lot of Staveleys when thy took over!

Ah, good thinking. The LMS and LNER wouldn't have worried about that but under the BR umbrella things would perhaps be different. 1951 is a not untypical date for resolving such issues (irrespective of which region they came under).
