Unusual block instrument

Has anybody seen this type of non-pegger before?

Image
Photo: N L Cadge/John Hinson collection, 20/9/91.

It was at Dinnington Colliery Junction and is clearly paired with a GCR pegger and bell - but I suspect the non-pegger dates from before the GCR, so maybe MS&L? On the other hand, the box was Great Central, Great Northern, Lancashire & Yorkshire & North Eastern Joint so it could have come from almost anywhere . . .

But I am wondering if it might not have always been here, but was provided at some point when the block shelf was re-arranged, leaving no space for the width of a normal non-pegger.

Sorry about the quality but it is actually cropped from the corner of a general view of the frame.

I've never seen anything other than a GPO galvanometer in one of those tombstone housings.
The bezel looks GPO too, and I suspect your guess of a special to fit the space is right.

There are several that have done the round at sales and auctions. I've never given them a second look as they all look like converted galvanometers. Maybe i should look closer.

John,

By chance I've just found a photo showing two of them on the LD&ECR.

Excellent. So not a special bodge for Dinnington it seems.

Thanks,

John
