Clapham Junction layout c1970

Unread postby John Hinson » Mon Mar 19, 2018 2:28 pm

I have been asked by a correspondent if anybody could provide a plan, of any sort, covering Clapham Junction around 1970.

He is helping his elderley father complete his memoirs but has mislad the drawing he had.

If anybody can help, please PM me and I will put you in touch.

Thanks in advance,

John

The Old Maps website has a 1:1250 plan quoted as having been published 1963-70. It doesn't show the double track link between the CD fast lines and the SWD slow lines which was put in but never actually used - but I cant remember now exactly when it was put in (or even taken out again) but it must have been c1970 or perhaps a little later.

Thanks. Sorry - I should have made it clearer that is is needed for his father to publish his memoirs. I guess as a last resort a drawing could be produced from the map but OS maps aren't always accurate with pointwork, especially slip points.

One of the reasons I am asking for help is that at present I am not in a position to produce a drawing myself, possibly for some while.

1:1250 maps of that era were generally reasonably accurate although I take your point about slips.

Nevertheless in the absence of anything else a drawing made from the map is likely to be about as good as he is going to get, particularly as Clapham Junction involved two separate SR Divisions and was vast and complex. Once a drawing had been made, a bit of thought could probably identify likely slips, there are unlikely to have been many, if any, in running lines but perhaps a few in the yard or in the sidings that stretched towards Wandsworth Town (the name of which escapes me for a minute).

Pryer's "Track Layout Diagrams of the SR", section S9, has a 1971 diagram.

Pryer shows a single track ladder, "into use 9/5/71", the crossover connecting the CD and SWD "TOU 10/1/72, removed 21/5/78".
I can only find two references to its use :
RO 9/71 : 11th July - 1915 Portsmouth - Waterloo diverted via Sutton, "probably the first passenger train to use the connection."
RO 10/71 : 1st August - Troop train Chesterfield - Crowborough, via Waterloo.

Thanks. Does that George Pryer plan show A, B & C boxes in one?

Yes. From just North of the Carriage Washer almost to Wandsworth Town on the SWD, and a similar distance down the Brighton Main Line.
I'll send a copy privately.

Thanks. Looks ideal. I will put the contact in touch with the SRS.

If this all proves abortive then I would be able to coble together a diagram from the mid 1975 period from my photographs and an isolation diagram I have laying around.
