Criteria for New Posts

Unread postby Chris Osment » Wed Jun 17, 2009 8:11 pm

Under the old software, if I clicked 'show new posts' and then accidentally (sadly all too often :x ) closed the browser before I had read all the listed posts, even if I re-opened the browser immediately the next click on 'show new posts' showed nothing. Now I find instead tonite that I can read the posts, close the browser, re-open about 15-20mins later and when I clicked 'new posts' it showed me all the new posts since the last visit AND all the ones which it has showed me previously! Has there been some change to the criteria for 'new'-ness here please?

Yes, your status is now saved on the server and not in the cookie.

Its better, innit?

If you want to wipe them out you can "mark all messages read".

Brilliant! I like it! Will this also stop the problem where, if I leave the computer for an hour, but stay logged in, the flags for new messages also used to disappear?

Errr....how please? I can't find any such command against either the list or the individual posts :-(

Above the list of threads, on the left if you are using the Caledonian colour scheme, on the right of the Midland and Southern ones.

It says Mark Topics Read.

Having investigated a bit further, I find:-

- if I click 'mark topics read' then it seems to mark only within that individual forum (perhaps obvious)

- on the Board Index there is a 'mark forums read', but if I click that then close the browser and re-open I still get the full list of "new posts" which I had previously.

Is this a caching or timing problem, or am I badly misunderstanding what can/should be done here please?

The idealwould be to have a 'mark all posts read" option on the list generated by "new posts", but I assume that feature doesn't exist?

[As an aside - and perfectly true - I have just been talking to a friend back from 6 months in Basra. On one occasion his office came under mortar fire while he was on the phone to his IT help desk. As the call had already taken a very frustrating 90 minus he was ***** if he was going to give up then, so he dived under the desk with his body armour and took the phone with him!! I think the problem got fixed eventually..... Fortunately the rest of us are in better situations here :D ]

Sorry, I really don't know the answers to your questions without experimenting which won't be any quicker for me to do than it will be for you.

However, I have just tried Mark forums read from within Firefox and it certainly does remove all "unread" markings.

The pudding tastes really excellent after more than three hours! :D

Another bonus point for the DI and his new software!

Err, you're not going to like this but.....

Having gone back to using 'Southern' after the text aligment was fixed (thanks again), I now find that the 'Mark forums read' option has disappeared!! The 'mark topics read' option still exists within individual forums, and also the 'mark forums read' does exist if I use 'Midland' instead - doh!

I think I'll shunt myself into a siding for a few days.....

It is in a different place, but it is there.

You will find it under the line showing the General Chat section.

I'm still looking for a refuge siding to escape into.

Try the North London No.1 Lines - they're reduced to sidings for the moment - and at least you'll feel at home there [not sure whether that's Up Home or Down Home though].

I have now had the opportunity to check this with Internet Explorer too, and it works correctly there for me, too. I cannot persuade it to deliver cached data in these circumstances, but if you find that it does the solution is as simple as clicking on the Refresh button to update the data displayed on your screen.

Or, by full list of "new posts" do you mean what is displayed when you go to the View New Posts section? If so, this is doing what it says on the box - it displays new posts, not unread ones.
