As some of my replies to Jersey Mike's essays take weeks to compose, I always do those off-line. As for learning the British Broadcasting Corporation ode, I sometimes cheat by copy-pasting from the forum to the draft, though most of the odes are quite simple anyway.

Most of my problems of losing work disappeared when I realised that I could scroll down to the recent messages bit below the reply, select a bit of text there, and "quote" it straight into the reply.

Now it is 5 years later, and it has happened to me a few times. My action was to denounce the forum setup as a "health risk" and copy text as I typed it. The most important line of action is to copy all the submission text just before the preview. If I then find myself logged out without warning, all I need to do is log back in, find the post to which I am replying, and paste it back into place.

I've just wasted an hour and a half, now I've lost the lot! Does't work very well does it?
