FavIcon Change.

Unread postby MRFS » Sat May 15, 2010 2:21 pm

More of an observation than anything else; I had cause to use Virgin's t-mobile wifi service on Thursday, travelling north from Euston.

As a result my FavIcon for this forum has changed to a small Virgin logo - anyone else had that?

It's not a problem in the least, I'm just wondering if it is a small bug in Chrome.
ND: Why is there a door handle on the inside of my airing cupboard?
MF: Because it's the fire exit from Narnia.

I like David Lynch films. I don't consider incomprehension to be a barrier to enjoyment.

Hmmm, interesting.

Currently, there is no "favicon" allocated to this site. There used to be one but it must have fallen by the wayside with a server move.

So maybe Virgin put their own one in as the default image?

I'll make another some time . . . I'll pop a temporary one in for now so you can see if that changes anything.

John

PS - anybody baffled by the reference to favicon? It is the little icon that appears to the left of the web address in most browsers.

Ooops - didn't mean to baffle - though a Studio 433 box is now showing in the tab. :D

A visual aid:

First tab is the new 433 icon, then underneath is the bookmarks bar with DDave, here with the Virgin logo and then at the RH end a bookmark without an icon - which was the state of play on this browser until I travelled with Virgin!

Glad the temporary "433" one shows - sometimes it takes a while to be recognised (cache-ing etc) and it ain't showing on mine yet!

I don't know a lot about Chrome but some browsers will not pick up a new icon for a bookmark unless you re-bookmark it.

I'm sorely tempted right now to draw a quick signal icon like we had once before, but I have a curry to cook . . .

My Signalbox desktop shortcut icon has suddenly changed to '433' by itself...........................

Blimey, if you could smell it from there, it can't have been that bad!

It has: the Virgin is now an UQ - self updated on the tab and the bookmarks bar. Yay!

.... Teetering on the edge of computing-literacy with some of the terminology this thread.
Now understand what a FavIcon / favicon is though ....

I noticed a signal arm on my work computer the other day, but the home one still just shows the default, when it should show a Home. I haven't seen 433 on either.

So much depends on the browser - some will appear by magic over time, others will only show it if you re-bookmark.

There is quite a lot on the web discussing this, but mostly from the designer's rather than the end-user's point of view. It seem Internet Explorer 5 and 6 are the most recalcitrant.
