Anticipated forum outage (done!)

Unread postby John Hinson » Mon Oct 24, 2011 6:11 pm

At some point fairly soon it will be necessary to take the forum off-line for an upgrade to the forum software.

At present I cannot say exactly when this will be owing to external pressures - I need a clear day to manage it comfortably although hopefully it will not be off-line that long.

Please don't panic - we'll be back!

John. Thank you for all you do and the time you give to keep the forum running. Also the information that you seem to have at your fingertips (or close by). Your knowledge keeps us thinking and posting.

A big 'thanks' to the D.I. is called for, I think?

Fair enough, but I thought a pseudo-cockney " 'Ear! 'ear! ", would look rather odd.

Thanks from me as well; this forum (and the main site too) are the most incredible resources and we are fortunate indeed to have John's knowledge, commitment and (labour of) love!

Steady chaps, flattery will get you nowhere!

I'm still looking for that clear day. It was very misty here this morning . . .

Does it take twice as long in fog or falling snow?

Hopefully the forum won't go "bang" as the update approaches!

How else would we get due warning?

The important part of the update is completed.

Outstanding items which I need to address are:
  • New users cannot register
  • The Caledonian colour scheme is temporarily out of use, an alternative blue scheme (one of the default offerings from the developers) can be used for now.

Further to the above:

New registrations
This is now working. The new version of forum software includes the now-common "Captcha" system which, quite frankly, is a system that drives me crazy so I apologise to any new members that find it the same but hopefully it will keep those irritating spammers away. We haven't suffered many but the numbers have increased recently - probably because they are desperate to find systems that don't use Captcha!

Colour Schemes
The only one that blatantly would not work with the new version is Caledonian. The substitute (temporary, or maybe permanent) is a default scheme which should not give any problems. If I decide to retain it, it will gain appropriate header images in due course.

Without exhaustive testing I cannot be sure the Midland and Southern schemes are 100% although they seem OK. If you spot any problems there please let me know.

New Features
There are some new features, mostly behind the scenes for management rather than for what you will see and experience but I need to do some studying now . . .

Hope all is working OK now.
