Meet-up?

Unread postby MRFS » Sat Nov 17, 2012 10:14 am

As I've mentioned before: how about a meet-up in London?

a) When? Saturday 19th January or Saturday 26th January 2013.

b) Where? It boils down to two possibilities:
  • If you like Wetherspoons pubs; I tend to use The Penderel's Oak on High Holborn LINK
  • I also quite like the Queens Head in Acton St. (bit further on than the Water Rats, if you know the area, near KX) LINK

I've used both of these pubs for 'internet' group meetings: some of you will be familiar with the Penderel's Oak from District Dave meets and at least one of you will be aware of the Queens Head from [ringing-chat]. Both pubs have their plus points and I'm easy either way: the menu is greater in the 'Spoons but the Queens Head is a bit quieter. Both places have a rather large selection of beers.

c) What time? As this is the first ever meet: how about setting a time of about 1300? That should give those who want to plenty of time to plan getting to London, have a drink or two and then either head home or stay in the smoke.

d) What do you, dear reader, need to do? Well, in the thread below, indicate which date you would prefer and which location. There's plenty of time to discuss it. Penderels Oak is half-way between Chancery Lane and High Holborn UndergrounD stations and the Queens Head is about 5 minutes walk from Kings Cross/St Pancras.

Over to you.
ND: Why is there a door handle on the inside of my airing cupboard?
MF: Because it's the fire exit from Narnia.

I like David Lynch films. I don't consider incomprehension to be a barrier to enjoyment.

Both dates are fine by me, and either venue, with a mild preference for the Queen's Head as it's more convenient.

Yep, dates both look okay for me also. Time and venues as well (slight preference for The Queen's Head, based more on the stated 'quietness' than convenient location), though could also manage earlier (well, a lot earlier - but being relatively local helps of course  - but might 12:00 suit any long distance travellers better?).

Not wishing to put an unintended spaniard in the verks, but for convenience, and perhaps 'segregation', I hear that The Parcel Yard is quite good for space, being of good size, and on two levels with several distinct sections, though it may apparently be a bit pricey, but one roving correspondent reports a good range of ales etc.
It's well placed for transport connections, being on KX station in part of the west side redevelop/refurbishment opened in March this year, in former 1st & 2nd Floor railway office space, up stairs (there's also a lift) next to the entrance of Platform 9.

Happy to go with any majority decision though.

I have found the Parcel Yard to be far too expensive, so I've discounted it: likewise with the Betjeman Arms in St.P.

Probably better (to make the meet last longer/be more attractive to those who may have an expensive train ticket) to stick with the two pubs originally suggested but quite happy to go with the majority decision.

Thanks for the info. MRFS.
Plan A it is then.

I'd like to show up too! (you know... cheaper to catch a plane from Portugal than a train from Manchester). Please do setup the date early so i can see if i can show up! :-)

Hugo - I think we'll leave the

discussion of the date open until
1400 on Wednesday 21st November
:

I'll put something up in the Forum Announcements section, asking people to visit this topic.

We can decide the fine location nearer the time, depending on the numbers expressing an interest as the Queens Head is cosy (but OK for a group of 25), but obviously if it's going to be international we do need to set the date.

:-) Unfortunately, nowadays, the UK railways have the same mobility problems as international travelers... you have to book early to get the best prices.. so i think it is a problem for everybody!

An excellent idea, I'll be delighted to attend, so long as the pub has an interesting supply of ales, not from the Nationals!

26th preferred, but the 19th would be OK.

Why London though, Chepstow has some good pubs!!!!!

I'll start practicing drinking this evening!

Cheers,
