Meet up 2017

Unread postby David Holden » Fri Oct 28, 2016 9:06 am

It's getting to that time of year when some of us have, in the past had a meet up.
The last couple have been at Kidderminster and combined the museum, a pint and a good old chat.

As a change for 2017 can I suggest we have a meet up at York, it has the same potential ingredients as Kidderminster.
As for date, well late Jan or Feb seem traditional.

Open to suggestions as usual.

York is a bit far for some us, but the Northerners deserve a turn. A session on the L&Y layout in the NRM would separate the signalmen from the booking boys.

Hi Dave ,any info where to buy your train ticket from to York as you must have had the cheapest rail ticket from Wickford to Kidderminster possible!

Some TOCs give a discount if you buy one of their advance tickets on their own website. For some journeys split ticketing can be cheaper, but you may lose flexibility.

Other than that, all rail ticketing websites sell the same thing at the same price. And the independent retailers charge booking or admin fees.

Hi Scarpa, as JG said really, just spend time trying various splits and you may get lucky.

A problem with York is that it tends to be very busy on Saturdays and somewhat rowdy. We will need to find a suitable pub. The York Tap on the station is generally a good pub but I called in there on Saturday after the SRS meeting and it was packed, even screaming babies etc. Nor does it do food.
I suppose I could do some research!

We could subscribe to send you on a fact finding mission round the pubs of York.

Does it have to be a Saturday? With enough advance notice could we pick any day?
ND: Why is there a door handle on the inside of my airing cupboard?
MF: Because it's the fire exit from Narnia.

I like David Lynch films. I don't consider incomprehension to be a barrier to enjoyment.

Use annual leave for a visit to a pub? Well, stranger things have happened, but on balance I'd prefer the weekend.

What else would one use annual leave for?

Midweek would be fine for me, but I accept that this might be inconvenient for some.

Most probably the same applies for me, depending on specific dates/commitments.

I wouldn't mind an excuse to visit York as it's a while since I've been. It would be great if we could find out when they're running the old Lanky Model Railway that they used to train signalman on.

As for booking advance tickets I generally use gwr.com as they do not charge any booking fees unlike the trainline or raileasy.

I think the last time I went to York was when Grand Central were doing a special promotion for Modern Railways readers and their special offer plus a ticket from Chippenham where I live to Paddington was way cheaper than anything Cross Country could offer.
