Signalbox closures 2015

Unread postby colin1501 » Sat Feb 21, 2015 10:17 am

Section C shows the following (amongst others) as closing this year. Does anyone have an indication of likely dates?

Cuxton, Aylesford, Maidstone West, East Farleigh, Wateringbury, Lewes, Newhaven Town and Harbour, Banbury South and North.

Grateful for any info.

Banbury boxes are now planned for July 2016.

Isn't Littlehampton, Arundel Barnham and Lancing listed for this year too?

Think most of those are down for 2016.

I would have thought that Rochester, Gillingham (Kent), Rainham (Kent), and Sittingbourne are due for closure in 2015 too, not to mention Plumpton Crossing box in (East Sussex), with its wheel operated gates.

Has a date been fixed for Wolverhampton yet? May has been mentioned elsewhere.

I think Plumpton (Sussex) shut in 2013/14.

Engineering Access Statement does show May 2-4 for Wolverhampton. Two day block at Stafford too, with commissioning shown at August BH.

I can confirm that Plumpton Gate box has definitely not closed. I was stopped there only last week and the gates are still in full working order, if a little slow in opening to road traffic. I know the crossing well as I live less than 10 miles away.

Are there any dates yet for the closure of Newhaven Town/Harbour signal boxes? Section C shows 2015 but as the IFS panel in Newhaven Town is not far off "only" 2 years old, I'm hoping they''ll last a while longer

Interesting. According to Phil Deaves' website the official closure of Plumpton GB had been planned for 25th February 2014 so it seems to have slipped a bit although I don't recall hearing that the date had slipped at all. Anyone know what the date now is for the closure to take place?

When I did my Sussex trip back on 4th February one of the signalmen I spoke to said he was transferring to Newhaven Harbour for, IIRC, about 1½ years. I don't know if that is an indication of when closure may take place though.

If the Plumpton Level Crossing Campaign on Facebook is to be believed, it looks like replacement may be around September 2015.

It is very sad these signalboxes are going it is amazing how quick the new signalling is being installed. Can anyone offer the dates of the oldest working power signalling boxes left in the U.K. types of panels or miniature power frames currently in use. Hull Paragon must rate somewhere although it appears to have been well maintained, is it the original panel? I take it the air operated points have all been replaced? Are there any G.R.S. panel installations left?

This thread is about box closures in 2015. Please keep on topic.

I have copied this post to a new thread.

I believe Cuxton, Aylesford, Rochester, Gillingham, Rainham and Sittingbourne close over the Easter weekend (Friday 3rd to Monday 6th April).
Southeastern's website reports at http://www.southeasternrailway.co.uk/ab ... e-changes/ that line closures will be:
Swanley to Faversham - closed 3rd & 4th April
Sole Street to Faversham AND Gravesend to Maidstone West - closed 5th & 6th April
Sheerness branch closed 3rd to 6th April.

The Brundall - Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth boxes have gained a one year reprieve and resignalling is now due October 2016.
