It will lose its special status/meaning on the Norwood Junction to New Cross Gate section of railway soon, as virtually all trains on that corridor will be a class 9, serving two separate service groups and companies.

I'm rather surprised that cl.8 freight hasn't been abolished to release cl.8 , the vanishingly few freights running at 35mph are likely to be running under special conditions anyway.

Maybe one day they might consider the letters instead of numbers, as before 1962 . . . cough.
