AWS Seal crimp - Security risk?

Unread postby Mike Hodgson » Tue Oct 18, 2016 10:07 am

I saw this on ebay and wondered whether somebody with the technical knowledge could comment on whether it is current and if so should be reported as a threat to railway security?

I don't know if it is current but these days with so many contractors working on the system such things as this are likely to turn up from time to time and I doubt there is much NR can do unless they can prove theft which is unlikely. The risk is quite small as there is little that you could do to an AWS magnet that wouldn't cause a fault to be reported by the train drivers should they receive an incorrect indication.

This is in fact a seal for rolling-stock mounted AWS equipment, not track-mounted equipment. I will leave it to others to take a view on whether that produces a higher security risk.

They tend to use brightly coloured plastic seals in driving cabs rather than the old lead type these days anyway. Haven't seen a lead seal for years in fact.
