Metrolpolitan Vickers GRS Type SA Search Light Signal

Unread postby dana.bultitude » Thu Feb 9, 2017 1:02 am

G'day Mates, this is Dana Bultitude on behalf of Rob Mannell in Australia. Rob has a Metrolpolitan Vickers GRS Type SA Search Light Signal, AC Mechanism, 110 Volt, Lov 110, Cycles 50 that he would like to wire up to make the colour lens mechanism move. He has gotten the 12v light working showing red. Rob would like to know is anyone in the forum has wiring diagrams with instructions to help him get his signal working. He says it has two coils connected in the top row of terminals, the two outer terminals are one coil and the two middle are another coil and he wants to know what voltage to apply to these terminals and how to connect to reverse the coloured lens. This is not a permanent magnet field coil. It was tested in 1959, with a label saying holding voltage 90 volts and dropout voltage 48 volts. Thank you kindly for your help in advance.

Hi there
I've found the GRS catalogue. It's plain that Rob has the ac variant and the catalogue says that both coils need 110v ac. There was a variant in which the lamp was in series with the local coil but if both coils connections are on the terminals that can be discounted. Swapping the supply on the line coil should change the aspect from yellow to green but both coils need a supply to show other than red. Hope this helps

Dear Martin
Thanks so much for your quick reply. Rob is going to work on the AC Search Light Signal this weekend and we will report back our findings!

Martin Shawis perfectly correct but I'll just add that one coil (the local coil) should have a permanent 110v AC feed, possibly terminals Q1 and Q2 and the other should have a switched supply. These may well be G1 and G2. No feed will give a red aspect and yellow and green are given by energising this coil which one depending on polarity. Yes it may seem a strange concept using polarised AC but that's how it is!

Not wishing to veer too far off-topic, but the concept of polarised AC is used, would you believe, in top-loading washing machines where the motor operates the gearbox one way for agitate and the other for spin! You're essentially operating a small motor in the signal head, after all.
