"Yard Junction", Kenya

Unread postby John Hinson » Sun Feb 7, 2016 2:15 am

Amongst a batch of photographs taken in Kenya is one which I cannot positively identify:

Maximum zoom suggests the name may be "YARD JUNCTION":

Many (but not all) in this batch are of boxes around Nairobi - can anybody confirm if this is where this box is?

Thanks,

John

Whilst I can't confirm anything, Google MAPS provided this (slight(?)) possibilty.

There is a lot of Railway, in the immediate vicinity. Even, a railway museum!

Thanks. I found similar on Google Earth but, as you say, not conclusive.

I have found a list of photographs taken at that time (1979) but unfortunately the numbering doesn't correspond to that on the slides (because duds have been dumped). However, the logical place in the sequence taking other known locations into consideration, could make it South Africa rather than Kenya but it is hard to tell which. Maybe somebody familiar with the signal types could comment on that.

The lower quadrant signals make me think "not South Africa" but I'm sure they must have had then somewhere at sometime.

I have found this http://homesignal.surfermoon.com/nairobi.html which looks possible. Especially, if the stock on the left of your picture were in the platform road.

I can see you justify you username! Without doubt that is one and the same in the second and third pictures. And I have pictures from the other side of the line looking towards stock in the platform so it all fits.

I promise I did do a little Googling but was probably over-specific as I came up with no results for signal boxes at Nairobi.

Many thanks,

John

You are very welcome.

It is nice to be able find something, before some of the more expert members do.

Plus, I got lucky.

Further MAPS work brings up this

https://goo.gl/maps/6Z2PvnM8j3Q2 which is much more likely than my 1st offering.

The good news is that I believe it's still there!

That's the yardmaster's office at Nairobi (the sign reads "Yard Master"). It has no lever frame or signalling function apart from dispatching freight trains from the yard.

Nairobi has a signalbox (Nairobi East Junction) but there is yard working from there through the station itself. There are two ground frames, one each end of the station. (At least that was the situation when I lived there 10 years ago).

I have quite a few photos of Kenyan signalling if anyone is interested.

Thanks, Graham - that is very helpful.

There are pictures of the East Junction and also Station East GF in the collection, which were easily identified by the nameboard or diagram name.

Best regards,

John
