Black Semaphore Signals

Unread postby DCCDave » Tue May 3, 2016 7:37 pm

Hello All,
I am in need of some help to identify some semaphore signal arm icons that I have come across.
I am currently updating many semaphore signal icons that are used with the JMRI Programme to help to indicate what is happening on a layout.

It would appear that someone in the past has created five icons and dumped them in with the GWR LQ Icons I created a couple of years ago.

I would like to attached a folder with the five icons in if the moderator would allow me to, please.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Best Regards.

Which country does this relate to?

Hello Richard,

Thanks for your reply. There is the problem, I do not know where they came from which is why I want to upload the five Icons to see if anyone recognises them and can identify them for me.

I am still waiting for permission to add attachments to my posts.

Regards.

I am afraid you cannot upload images to our server as we do not have unlimited server space, but there are other ways.

Please read this thread for more information:

Thanks John,

I have got Dropbox and iCloud that I can use.
There are now six icons, all in .gif format with the largest pixel size of 26 x 25.

I have just uploaded the icons to my Dropbox. Here is the URL:

I hope that I have got it right!

Dave - the URLs in your last post need the [ bracket before the /url] to work.

Hi John,
Thanks. I have just edited them in. Incidentally, because the icons are so small I normally view them at X 500 Magnification. The quality is not good because they are in .gif format rather than .png format.

Richard, I was just about to send this when your post came in. Copy all of the URL between and including https - to raw=1 and paste it into your web browser. It should let you into my Dropbox where you can view the files. Select OPEN and your pc will open up a suitable programme to view it in. Use the zoom control to zoom out to about 500% to get a reasonable size to view them.

Cheers.

OK - so what do you want help with? The general usage of black signals would be for signals that would appear on a diagram - either a signalling notice or a box diagram that would be visible or at the edge of the controlled area - hopefully this is a link to a screenie of Acton Town (WL) with a bit of Ealing Common (WM) thrown in. The notice is about Acton, so the Acton controlled [1] signals are shown conventionally, and the reversed/black Ealing Common signals are there for information.

LINK

Does the link work?

[1] anyone that makes comments about A plated signals will get a hard stare. :)

The Link works and thanks very much for your info.
This is one possible solution to consider but in the context that these icons were created made me wonder if they are old style Continental? This is why I posted it in this particular forum where we have access to information about Railway Systems from around the World other than British.

However, having said that, some modellers do like to recreate Signal Box Diagrams, in exact detail, on their Control Panels so this could well have been an attempt to recreate a set of signal icons for this specific purpose.

If this is the case, is a full set used? Where can I get information about them from, please?
Allowing for "Murphy's Law" - someone, sometime will no doubt ask for a set of icons to be created. DOH!!!

Regards.

Dave,

Sadly, I have no thoughts. I have not seen such on any European diagrams!

Thanks Richard.
Perhaps someone else can provide a possible solution?

These are almost definitely not European - they would be from somewhere that used upper quadrant left-hand running and there aren't many places (Burma, being one) I think you're making it far more complicated than you need to - somebody drew these in black using (probably) MS Paint as easy and simple symbols. I really don't think you need to worry any further.
