St Albans South Signal Box has its 15,000 visitor

A further landmark was passed on Sunday 14th February when we had our 15,000th visitor since October 2008. He was 3 year old Eddy Palmer of Dunstable.
With members of his family he tried his hand at ringing the bells and pulling the levers.

In the picture Eddy is practising his signalling skills no doubt inherited from his Great Grandfather Eddie Williams who was a signalman at St Albans South in the 1960s.
Signal Box Trust Chairman, Tony Furse, commented: “We are proud to have reached this milestone in the recent history of our 124 year old signal box. We are delighted to welcome the many families and children who come to visit this hidden gem and to learn about the City's transport past and view the modern railway at the same time.”

We have back EMF diodes across all the bells - and in operating the tapper he's only switching a few milliamps in and out of the simulator, of course! We do have several families who make repeat visits due to the enthusiasm of their offspring for the box; just hope we can capture that enthusiasm when they are a bit older.

I suspect one and the same Eddie Williams I worked with in Watford PSB famous for driving a Reliant 3 wheeler christened the plastic pig.
