Does anyone know the name of the disused signal box on Stamford station

Don't think this question belongs on the Manned Crossing boxes thread.

I was given to understand that it was the original Stamford box, and that it had been bought and relocated there by Robert Humm or his firm, for use as part of their railway bookshop at the station. It wasn't accessible to customers last time I was there, and was painted a rather gaudy yellow colour which I gather was the MR's original practice. I gather they have since relocated and left the box behind, having had trouble with the condition of their premises.

I have moved this away from the Level Crossings section.

I think Mike is right - to my knowledge there was never an operational box on the platform at Stamford.

According to the Signalling Atlas & Signal Box Directory book it is the original Stamford Station box moved "only a few feet" which doesn't make sense to me as it wasn't near the platform in the first place - see plan at http://signalbox.org/diagrams.php?id=847. The book says it was used as a store by the bookshop which would explain its inaccessibility. The colour scheme sounds correct from Mike's description - see the preserved Armathwaite http://shop.studio433.co.uk/index.php?r ... ct_id=3936 for Midland Railway colours.

Robert Humm's bookshop has moved out of the railway station and is in premises in the town centre. There was nothing in their adverts about why they were moving. Great shame they've vacated the station - hope NR don't do anything silly to the buildings - and what will happen to the signal box?

Has this box ever been used for signalling trains because it isn't covered on the signal box prefix codes website

I believe the problem was to do with vibration from passing freights, falling masonry, removal of the station canopy by NR and listed buildings issues.
John's link is indeed the colour scheme I remember seeing. I can't help wondering how well early yellow paint lasted especially in industrial areas with smoke from factories as well as locos; perhaps it was like white carriage roof which turned grey when as they were more than a week out of works.

As far as I am aware it isn't on the station.

It seemed to take an inordinate amount of time for the bookshop to reopen

My recollection (which may well be incorrect, it's been a few years) was that it was fenced off from the railway and on land associated with the bookshop.

That was undoubtedly the case - I would hardly have thought it a suitable store for books, unless he wanted to age them!

I remember some years back he had a sale of books in the signal box, so I think some stuff were kept there.

It certainly was but not at it's present location, as stated elsewhere in this thread it was indeed the original Stamford box and if my memory is still holding up I believe it used to be located just the Peterborough side of Wothorpe Road overbridge.

. . . and I doubt it ever had a signal number prefix.

There are snaps of the signal box in June 2015 here: http://www.hall-royd-junction.co.uk/Hall_Royd_Prototype/Stamford.html.

Looks like my memory is indeed letting me down now I'm a senile citizen.
That would appear on railway land - fenced off from the street rather than fenced off from the railway.
