Level crossing distant signals

The above link shows a level crossing distant signal near Ballymena in Northern Ireland. Was this form of distant signal used elsewhere in the UK ? Was it common to have distant signals of a different format to those at a block post and if so what companies might have adopted this practice ?

These signals were not universal on the former BNCR, later MR-NCC and LMS-NCC, but were fitted at it is believed 5 crossings worked by resident crossing keepers. No home signal was provided, the signal read onto the red target on the gates, when "on". I have a much better image which hopefully you can see here, this was purchased from Ebay.

Very interesting, this format of distant was used at Slaght and Damhead. Any idea where else ? Those at Damhead were extant in the 1930s but I have no idea when they dated from or how long they remained in place.
