A short piece appeared today on the Network Rail Intranet about help given to volunteers who look after the station and "Moveable Platforms" at Halesworth. The article is very light in detail and I have never heard of these before.

Can anyone fill me in please?

Its what you get when you have a level crossing in the middle of a station.

They were replaced by a road diversion and bridge in 1958, and taken out of use 1962.

That answers that one then! My thanks to the DI. Were they just treated as conventional gates when it came to the signalling?

Yes indeed, hand-worked (and bolted from the box) in traditional GE style as you can see. I've put a diagram in the usual place so that you can get the picture.

I believe there was another one at Saxmundham, although it was only one-sided as the platforms were not opposite.

and I'd wager that Aitken has never seen one of those in Dundee - or even in Fife?

There's one at Brockenhurst.

The one at Brockenhurst is a little different - it is not a level crossing gate with platform attached but more of a moveable bridge for conveying luggage across the line. Nowhere near as large or heavy I suspect - those at Halesworth ran on rollers on a metal rail which you can just make out in the picture.

I have never seen it in the flesh - has anyone any photos? Best in a separate thread, please.

Further to this, there's a photo on eBay at the moment:
that shows Halesworth crossing across the railway.

I wasn't so aware of the Geograph website when this topic was first posted, but if you visit there are a number of pictures, ancient and modern, showing the movable platforms. It seems that the local museum is accommodated in the station building.
