Dose anyone know the total number of lever frame signalboxes still operational and Panel signalboxes including miniature lever frames in the UK?

Well, they are listed in the Signalling Atlas published by the SRS, along with what type of frame or panel(s) each has. It would be possible but very laborious to count them up; and you would have to apply a few years worth of changes to bring it up to date. It's possible that the somebody in SRS is maintaining the content in machine-readable form, and possibly a more up-to-date list may exist in to prepare for the next edition. If so, that would make the task of extracting the figure easier.

If you include those outside the national network, the definition of operational runs into shades of grey - do you for instance include operating simulations such as Exeter West and St Albans South, or full size frames used to work signals on models or private garden or miniature railways ?

Well, on preserved lines, Bluebell has a 19 lever Westinghouse & Saxby knee frame at Sheffield Park, a 40 lever frame (33 started off as Saxby rocker in 1882) at Horsted Keynes and now a Westinghouse L at Kingscote, so there are 3 for you. (12 levers of the L are Porthmadoc, so does that make it 4?)

This thread might span 'Current' and 'Heritage'.

The Bredgar and Wormshill has a nice mechanical box & the Beeches Light Railway has a non standard hydraulic installation for example.

The idea of listing and naming every surviving signal box here is bizarre - in no time this thread would get so huge and cumbersome as to be no use whatsoever. Please stick to the original question which is "how many?"

As has been said, there is a publication that would help, particlulay if read in conjunction with the Signalling Record Society's "Latest Signalling Alterations" section of its magazine and the "Section C" pages of this web site.

The very point I was trying to illustrate by picking such obscure ones.
