Hello all,

Have just been for a trip around the Durham coast line on a diverted ECML train: sad to see the run-down state of affairs where there were once complex layouts and many SBs.

Can anyone please explain why the more recent colour-light signalling controlled from Ryhope Grange southwards towards Greatham has signal numbers prefixed by NS? While those controlled by new workstations may logically require a different prefix than the older RG-prefixed signals, surely this is confusing as there are other colour-light signals nearby controlled by Norton South Junction, also prefixed NS?

Thanks in advance!
Alan

NS was used for 'Northallerton to Sunderland' - presumably a plan to resignal the whole of the Durham Coast line which never happened.
This definition of NS was stated in Signalling Notice NR/LNE 22, August 2010, Ryhope Grange S.B. Durham Coast Signalling Renewals.

Thus far NS applies to the section from Seaton Carew to Sunderland; the manual boxes control the areas around Billingham and Norton and then Bowesfield has taken over the southern section around Middlesbrough, Eaglescliffe and Urlay Nook.

Many thanks Jonathon. Time flies, I thought the changes were more recent than 2010!!

You're welcome - not sure if that's when the engineering took place but that's the date of the signalling notice.
